Trak Family Story

The Grapevine began with the dream of one man—Michael Trak, lovingly known as “Chef Mike.” He came to America in 1971 with just five dollars and a pocket full of family recipes. By 1972, his wife Mary joined him, and together they worked tirelessly in the restaurant industry—Chef Mike in the kitchen, Mary in the dining room.

​

In 1993, they decided it was time to open their own place. With the help of a close family friend, Tracy—whom they fondly called their Greek angel—they named it The Grapevine. Though Tracy tragically passed away before the restaurant opened, they honored her memory by keeping the name she chose.

​

After months of hard work (even sleeping inside the restaurant during construction), their dream came to life. Within six months, the Richmond Metro Guide named The Grapevine the #1 family-owned and operated restaurant in Richmond.

​

Now, a second generation continues the tradition. Mike and Mary’s children, Mitchell and Marianne, joined the business, along with Mitchell’s wife, Rita, who handles the administrative side. Together, they’ve maintained a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a menu full of delicious Greek and Italian cuisine.

​

Over the years, The Grapevine has donated over $500,000 to local charities, been recognized for having Richmond’s friendliest wait staff, and voted Best Restaurant North of the James by Richmond Magazine.

Meet The Staff

Michael Trak

Owner

(Chef Mike) Founder and owner of Grapevine. His inspiration and work ethic has made the restaurant what it is today. You can find him in the kitchen cooking and making sure that every dish is served with perfection. His passion for the food and service at Grapevine is why the restaurant has had continued success year after year.

 

He is one of if not the hardest working man in the industry, humble as you can get and will take the shirt off his back for anyone. In addition, he is a wizard when it comes to restaurant business. We always compare him to Mr. Miyagi always willing to teach us the wax on wax of techniques as it relates to the culinary lifestyle.

 

By the way you most certainly want to try one of his famous home made rolls! It's his own recipe.

Mary Trak

Owner

(Mother Mary) Co Founder and owner of Grapevine. A lot of the recipes have been passed down from her side of the family. Mary even helped build the interior of the restaurant with her own hands, turning the gas station into a beautiful restaurant. She was the first cook at Grapevine that worked side by side with (her husband) Chef Mike.

 

She is responsible for creating the wonderful desserts that delight our guests. These days Chef Mike tries to keep her out of the kitchen as much as possible, mainly for his own safety and sanity.

 

Mother Mary will come in and check on things daily, and if she sees something not up to her standards… lets just say its best to run! She knows her food and her kitchen very well and she is a huge part of the heart and soul of Grapevine.

Mitch Trak

General Manager & Co Proprietor

(Mitch) Co owner & General Manager of Grapevine. Takes pride in Grapevine being family owned and operated. He is in charge of the day to day  operations and controls all aspects of the business.  He focuses on PR and loves to chat with all guests and get to know people. His ambition has helped make Grapevine a success.

Also, he is a Authorized Notary Public and a official Civil Celebrant

As a licensed officiant, he ensures your marriage license is properly signed and submitted to the appropriate authorities. And lastly…
Mitch is also the proud owner of
Trak Transportation, offering classic and unique vehicles for weddings, proms, parties, and more.

Rita Trak

Events, Treasurer, & HR

Co-Owner, Treasurer, and the hardest part being Mitchell's wife! Rita is responsible for all financial aspects of the business. She controls all of the finances, billing, payroll, and general accounting. She also serves as the company HR manager. She is known to step in and take care of whatever the issue may be big or small.

​

Also, let it be known that Rita is Richmond's Premier wedding coordinator. She is known to pull brides out of the worst nightmares of wedding planning and poor coordination and save the day! She is used to working with all kinds of events and is hands-on all the way making sure that all the right touches and details are being met.

​

Rita is known to be selfless and put everyone else first, just don't make her mad because she will let you know in many different languages!

Allison Freeman

Dining Room Manager

Known as the true “hostess with the mostess,” Allison runs the floor with energy and a welcoming smile. She leads and trains the front-of-house team, ensuring every guest enjoys a smooth, polished experience.

 

Her positivity and attention to detail make every visit to Grapevine feel special — like you’re part of the family here. And that’s exactly why she’s such an important part of what we do.

Events Manager 

One of Grapevine’s longest-standing team members, Morgan is Mitchell’s right hand in overseeing daily operations.

 

She specializes in catering and mobile bar events but can step into any role when needed. With her warm smile and steady leadership, she helps make every Grapevine experience shine.

Alyssa has raised the bar for Grapevine’s in-house banquets. Efficient, organized, and always guest-focused, she keeps events running like a well-oiled machine.
